Although not unique to British academic life, this preoccupation with the category of the political is notable; what is lacking, in contrast with continental Europe, is a concern with the study that is fundamental to critical historical reflection: the history of historiography. And this is a subject that is fundamentally German in origin and practice. It also frequently overlaps with an allied subject of historical enquiry to which some students of the history of political thought – and of constitutional history – have often been peculiarly allergic: religion.
