With the appearance of Culture and Society and The Long Revolution, which made him into an acknowledged standard-bearer of the New Left, Williams took up a singular place in British intellectual life: a now fully credentialed academic, speaking from the central institutional spaces of the dominant culture (including Cambridge University, the Arts Council, and the British Broadcasting Corporation), he was yet an “unassimilated socialist” in an “in‹nitely assimilative culture,” who was simultaneously independent of the existing socialist parties, whether the Labour Party or the Communist Party.
