3a Reading actively in history Most scholars would agree that reading and writing are interrelated processes. As you read, you begin to see new connections among the ideas, people, and events you are studying. Then, as you start to write, new questions arise, prompting you to look at the texts you have already read in new ways and to find new materials that might help you answer your questions. ” Consequently, reading is the assignment you will encounter most frequently. If your professor has assigned a textbook, you will probably be expected to read a chapter or two each week.

If you 12/20/11 1:16 PM 24 3a 2b Approaching Typical Assignments in History are reading an article, look for an abstract at the beginning of the text and check for section headings. If you are examining a primary source, read the introduction to the text or the headnote to the document. As you try to answer these rather broad and general questions, new, more tightly focused and nuanced questions will arise, taking you deeper into the text. In this way, asking questions of the text helps you read with increasing sophistication and insight. Write as you read. Active readers are physically active, writing as they read. Writing while reading serves several functions. Writing directly in the margins of the text (provided, of course, that the text belongs to you) can help you locate important or confusing passages that you want to return to later.
