We use deep research and empathy to see other people as they saw themselves, but we also use hindsight and objectifying scholarship to see them as they could not see themselves, as only we can. 35 In spite of its acknowledged imperfections, ethnohistory remains, I would argue, the sharpest, most comprehensive, most inclusive, most flexible tool we have for writing and teaching the history of America's native peoples. All of the other approaches in use today are but facets of the ethnohistorical ideal.
This bibliographic essay is designed to identify current methodologies that are used and some that are not used by scholars in writing Native American history. The complexity of Native American life has finally convinced scholars to look closer at native cultures and their communities as the first proper step in studying Indian history. But what methodologies are being used? And who has used such ideas and different kinds of analytical interpretations in the work they have published? This essay discusses a selection of such work because it would be impractical to say that it is a complete survey of the literature, nor does it include all imaginable methodologies being used in rethinking and writing a new Indian history.
